Long ago the descendants of the 'Tuatha De Dannan', the 'Sidhe' retreated to another dimension of time and space when they were defeated in battle by the Milesians. They are said reside now under mounds and fairy raths and cains in the land of 'Tir nan nOg', a mythical island.
The Sidhe are said to give protection, healing and wisdom of their skills, such as Smithcraft to mortals.
The Gaelic word 's' or 'siog' refers to these otherworldy creatures we call fairies. The Sidhe are renowned as tall and handsome and are generally of a gentle nature unless roused by the destruction or damage of certain trees under their protection.
The Hawthorn, Oak and Ash are amongst these.
There are distinctions between tribes of the Sidhe notably that of the Sidhe who walks on the ground after sunset and the 'Sluagh Sidhe' the fairy host who fly through the sky at night and who take mortals with them on their journeys.
