PAGAN, WITCHCRAFT, WICCAN AND NEW-AGE AMULETS
Amulets, Talismans and Lucky Charms have been worn in every culture around the globe for thousands of years right up to the present day.
Well known examples include the Christian St Christopher for travellers and the Crucifix for protection against evil, the Hamsa hand from Kabballistic traditions which is said to protect those who wear or carry it from the 'evil eye'.
The Pentagram in Paganism, the Star of David in Judaism, the Keys of Solomon.
The Egyptian Ankh (Key of Life), the Viking Thor's Hammer and Runic symbols. Precious, semi-precious crystals and ordinary stones are often used as personal talisman and amulets, sometimes inscribed with sigils or symbols which have deep meaning and significance.
Amber and Jet are regarded as highly protective by witches, both are fossils, Amber is fossiled pine resin, Jet is fossiled coal. They, like crystals are seen as gifts from the Earth and contain the wisdom of the Earth. Amber is sometimes called 'solid sunlight' and is associated with fire and the sun, a solar amulet. Amber was prized by the Greeks and Romans, worn by shamans and witches who believe it can increase the power of their magic.
Jet is known as black amber, it is regarded as a highly powerful protective and grounding material.
In Native American tradition bear claws, elk antler pieces, eagle feathers, carved bone or stone fetishes were all worn or placed in pouches as amulets and talisman.
Examples of lucky charms are the four leaf clover, the lucky horseshoe symbol, black cats and charm (mojo) bags.
There is much debate and sometimes confusion regarding the difference between an amulet and talisman. An amulet is generally worn as protection from unwanted influences and a talisman is an object used for the purpose of attracting beneficial influences.
