Work-life balance is gaining greater attention in the media; more and more people are now looking at how they can turn their hobby into a full-time job.
It’s the stuff dreams are made of.
Imagine leaping out of bed every morning excited at the prospect of going to work because you actually enjoy your job.
Or that your job involves doing something every day that you have always enjoyed.
9 years ago, “My sister had bought me a book on designing and making your own cards and that got me started.
I made cards for friends and families, then I designed them for a friend’s wedding and I thought ‘that’s not such a bad thing to do’ Now we do 84 Christenings and 3 Weddings a month. We also supply Craft & DIY supplies online.
Just over one in ten people are currently doing their dream job, but we all know that more and more people are looking for greater satisfaction from their career.
However, making the leap is often the only thing stopping them.
It took me two years to pluck up the courage to leave my career. I was a financial advisor for 19 years. I knew I didn’t want to do it, but it was quite a big thing to give up all the money.
But I decided it was worth taking the leap. So I gave up my career as a financial advisor and set up my own wedding stationery company, Handmade By ‘me’.
But before you race in tomorrow morning to hand in your notice, there are a few points you need to bear in mind.
First, it pays to get some advice, be it from friends, family or a careers advice service; I got most of my advice from Business Ability and Inbiz.
They can help you decide what your interests are and how these can be applied to a business environment.
Second, you should consider whether it is something that you really want to do, or whether you’re just having a bad week at work.
Remember, you will be wholly responsible for your business so you need to make sure you are committed to the idea.
I have never worked as hard as I do at the moment; I am putting in 17 hour shifts every day.
I had to do a few courses to help with using computers. I have also done a course on website design, which I used to set up my first website.” I now leave it to the experts.
Be prepared to work part-time. This will help keep your business afloat in the early days. If money is your main concern.
But please, please be realistic: making your hobby a full-time job is based more on improving the quality of your life than it is on making your millions.
At the same time, don’t let a lack of qualifications stop you from exploring your options.
But with dedication and perseverance, there is nothing to stop you from following your dreams.
