Cicada are medium to large (0.8 to 2 inches), have two pairs of membranous wings, prominent compound eyes, and three simple eyes. Most of the species belong to the family Cicadidae. Male cicadas produce loud noises by vibrating membranes (timbals) near the base of the abdomen. Most North American cicadas produce rhythmical ticks, buzzes, or whines, although in some species the "song" is musical.
